Château La Couspaude 2005
Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé. 70% Merlot 20% Cabernet Franc 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
Jean-Claude Aubert owns this estate along with his charming brother Alain, who also owns a number of smaller but very good estates in the Libournais. It is a gem of a Château, small and beautifully formed! The wine is a true “garage” wine in style, intensely concentrated and sensual, bursting with ripe berry fruit but has benefited greatly with a toning down of the oak in recent vintages. A Château that is beginning to carve out a niche for itself outside of the “garage” phenomenon, this is one to watch out for.
Really good dark fruit nose. Big and spicy with massive, but not overextracted, tannins which however, are ripe. Very savoury dark fruit. The wine needs a lot of time –7-10 years – but will even out into a very fine wine. 9-19 years.
