Chateau Girolate 2005
Bordeaux AC. 100% Merlot
This estate is extraordinary. Thibault and Basaline Despagne were given the keys of the kingdom by their father Jean-Louis when they were both very young and they have brought an enormous dynamism to their several Châteaux. They spearhead many of the groupings of young vignerons in Bordeaux, who are looking to the future and adapting to the market. Girolate is a tiny estate separate from the mother ship, Château La Tour Mirambeau and their other châteaux, Mont Pérat, Franc Pérat and Bel Air Perponcher.
In Girolate, the vineyard is planted with 100% Merlot, at a density of 10,000 vines to the hectare and the vines are planted almost as bonsai, producing usually only two, or occasionally, three bunches per vine. The wine is fermented in barriques that are mounted on cradles. These allow the barrel to be rotated to keep the juice and skins in contact with each other. After racking, the grapes are freed from the barrel by springing it open, and then pressed in a small manual basket press. The racked wine is then put back into the same barrel where it matures altogether for about eighteen months. It is a round, mellow and extremely concentrated wine with elegance and suppleness and no harsh tannins, but meant for the long haul.
Carrying the lowly Bordeaux AC appellation, this wine punches far, far above its weight and is becoming the darling of many wine writers on both sides of the debate! This Girolate is deep ruby, with rich dark fruit and blackcurrants on the nose, a beautifully rounded palate with soft, coating tannins and fresh balance of acidity. Girolate always seems to slide down like velvet. This is a wine of the future, both in its cellaring potential but also in its style. The hectares planted make it too large to be a garage wine and if there were a classification in this area, Girolate would be up at the top. 8-18 years.
